2013 Exhibition:白夜行 (Byakuyako, Into the White Night)

Byakuyako (Into the White Night; translated as Under the Midnight Sun) is a mystery novel by Keigo Higashino published in 1999. Its starting point is the murder of a pawnbroker in Osaka. The story concerns a man and a woman, Ryoji Kirihara, the victim’s son, and Yukiho Karasawa, daughter of a suspect in the murder. It has been adapted for film, television drama, and stage.

This work is the first adaption of Keigo Higashino’s famous novel for figure skating. The music used is the theme song from the soundtrack of the TBS television series Byakuyako, Into the White Night, composed by Shin Kono. This music conveys a sense of Ryoji’s isolation and sadness, trapped in darkness, never able to walk under the sun. But that is not all. The beautiful melody also speaks for him, letting us hear a voice of grief from a place of innocence still sleeping deep within his heart. This music is essential for expressing Ryoji Kirihara’s character.

As the story develops, Ryoji Kirihara commits a variety of crimes. But Ryoji performed each of them with the happiness of Yukiho Karasawa in mind. Perhaps Ryoji has already lost his soul. But when we think about the background behind Ryoji’s performing crimes for Yukiho’s sake (the truth of the pawnbroker’s murder), the number and seriousness of the crimes Ryoji has committed, and Ryoji’s end (why did he die?), we sense, painfully, how much Ryoji loved Yukiho.

In this figure skating work, the many evil acts Ryoji performed are interpreted as “wrong, yet pure and innocent acts of self sacrifice.” It depicts how Ryoji lived, continuing to protect the woman he loved, even if he love was not returned. In the original novel, Ryoji is the protagonist, but he is depicted from the perspectives of other characters; the composition of the tale utterly disregards depicting his psychology. In this figure skating work, however, we put ourselves in Ryoji’s position and focus on depicting his emotional state directly.

At the end of the story, Kirihara Ryoji takes his own life at Christmas. In connection with his death, the final performance of this work was on December 24, 2013, at Medallist on Ice, held at the Saitama Super Arena.
