JE TE VEUX

2014 Exhibition:Je te veux

This setting for this work is a small, undistinguished lane in a corner of Paris. It is the story of a man who always uses that place for meetings with the woman he loves. The story expressed in this figure skating work was inspired by the famous photograph Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville, 1950 by Robert Doisneau (1912-1994).

The music is Je te veux (I want you) by Érik Alfred Leslie Satie (1866-1925), performed by the late Kentaro Haneda (1949-2007). In this work, I use a number of props—a cigarette, a coat, a hat, a scarf, a mannequin torso—to depict, as a short movie, the sweet, sad love between a man and a woman, while remaining true to the rhythm of Haneda’s performance of the waltz.

In this work, I put great effort into depicting the psychological state of the man walking down the lane at the beginning and end of the performance. Entirely the same steps are repeated in the prologue and epilogue, but I was experimenting with new expressive techniques to display utterly different feelings. The prologue depicts emotional state of the man eagerly heading towards the place where he had arranged to meet the woman. The epilogue depicts the feelings of the man, walking down the lane, alone, thinking of the woman who has left him. In these parts of the work, lighting is used effectively to recreate a line as the lane in the background setting that surrounds the man.

The conception was also spurred by the tone color of Haneda’s performance on the piano. As he plays it, Je te veux unfolds in basically a bright, cheerful mode, but the theme at the end is imbued with a mournful air. That is the result of the pianist’s interpretation, which differs from the original, which stays in the same tone throughout. Wishing to respond to the two subtly different melodies as Haneda performed them, I experimented with various ideas, finally arriving at the expressive technique of performing the two emotional states using the same steps.

Sadly, in this story, the days in which the man and woman could happily spend time together did not continue forever. Why did they part? That is a question I would ask those who view this short movie to work out themselves.
