“Ave Maria” by Chris Botti

2016 Autumn:Ave Maria

“Prayer” is a moment when a person, in a tranquil state, offers hopes and thanks to heaven. That, we can say, is a universal human action, cherished in every age and cultural sphere.

The music used in this work is “Ave Maria,” by Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828). A song that almost everyone knows, it was composed in the context of Roman Catholic faith in the Madonna, the Holy Mother Mary, and has been transmitted throughout the world. Even now that melody penetrates deep into our hearts as the symbol of prayer itself, and not just Christian prayer.

This “Ave Maria” is performed by Chris Botti (1962-), a world-renowned trumpeter. The music used is a recording of his live performance in Symphony Hall, Boston, in September, 2008. At that now legendary concert, a variety of performers, transcending genres—classical, jazz, pops, rock—performed together. (Marvelous video works were also shown.) “Ave Maria” was performed as though to announce the rising of the curtain at that live event. Come to think of it, until now there had been almost no figure skating works to performances on the trumpet. If I could take part in that trans-genre session through the physical expression of skating, how amazing would that be?

The clear sound of the trumpet, as though pouring down from heaven, and the traces drawn on the ice as the skates are flowing: a rich collaboration between music and skating is born.

This figure skating work is the first in which I have not included jumps. For this trumpet version of “Ave Maria,” performed on ice dyed Madonna blue, I felt no need to incorporate jumps, because “long tones” and other trumpet techniques elaborating the timber of the music go beyond technique to the realm of meditation. This work presents one direction for patinage artistique (artistic skating), figure skating not bound by conventional rules and value systems. I offer it as a humble prayer to the figure skating world of the future.
